ARTIST'S STATEMENT
For the past nine years I've been the Art Director for flashquake. During that time it has been a pleasure to feature the work of many talented artists in this gallery. We've explored a broad range of styles and media. There have been many painters working in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and mixed media. There have been photographers, sculptors, glass artists and even a colored pencil artist. Some of the work was whimsical and some was daring. Some was serene and some disturbing. I personally believe some of our artists will be studied by future generations but only time will tell. All our artists are awake in the world they move in and they search for a way to understand what they observe. The thread that ties this vast array of work together is that all these artists have to make art as a method of communication. It is about artists and the story of how we move through our world. We reveal ourselves in our work in much the same way as our writer's share their observations and thoughts. Art is another method of journaling and allows us to grow in our understanding of who we are and how the world works.
I'm fascinated by media and whether I am writing, painting or photographing I find that what I learn in one medium informs all the media I work in. This year, I've taken up a new medium-soft pastel. I'm confident that what I learn from this medium will change how I use other media. It will influence what I point my camera at, it will impact the way I apply color when working in acrylic, oil or watercolor. It changes the details I include in the stories I write. Art makes me notice things I might not have noticed otherwise.
